In theory, platforms like youtube will pay channels a portion of the ad revenue that their videos make for youtube. In reality, this is very little money, so most people do in-video sponsorships (as you’ve surely seen), and outside revenue streams like selling merch.
Let’s say you wanna advertise on YouTube. They charge you 10 cents every time someone views your ad.
Got a million views on a video? Cool, that’s ($0.10 per view) x (1,000,000 people) = $100,000 in revenue for YouTube.
More views = more ads shown = more money made.
To create an incentive for uploaders to keep uploading, YouTube gives them a cut of the ad revenue. If you’re bringing YouTube views, you’re bringing them money.
