How do people who can’t see well swim without contacts?

You’re not supposed to sleep, shower or swim with contacts. Sleep- easy. Shower-fine I imagine. But how do people who can’t see swim? I don’t see people (ie adults) wearing goggles at the beach or pool unless they’re long distance swimmers. Do people wear prescription sunglasses to lounge in the pool? Like what is the deal?

It depends. I have prescription swimming goggle I wear that functions as glasses if I am diving in the pool or will be jumping at the waves at the beach. If I am just lounging next to a pool, I use both my regular prescription glasses, and prescription swimming goggles.

You can definitely swim in saltwater with contacts if you are really careful (been doing so the past few days) but it’s not exactly smart.

I found a prescription scuba mask for my trip to Hawaii several years back. Fucking magic. It’s one of my most prized possessions simply because it let me see something I otherwise would not have been able to see – lots of fish, and manta rays!

I typically wear contacts and goggles at the pool and the beach. FWIW, I was once a competitive swimmer, so goggles are familiar to me. After my head hit the wall of the swimming pool a couple of times, my ability to see became more important than my fashion sense, apparently. They do make prescription goggles for those who are so inclined, and there are probably people who wear prescription sunglasses in the water. However, those won’t help you see underwater. I’m sure there are a fair number of people who just hang on to the person that best resembles their SO without corrective eyewear, hoping they leave with the same person they came with. 🤞 Maybe that’s why so many people hold hands at the beach?

I just don’t typically open my eyes under water. Keep my hands in front of me if I’m swimming under water. Goggles also work. I have opened my eyes under water and had no issues. But I wear my extended wears all day everyday till they fall out. So they usually have a good suction to my eyes.

Also, I get my eyes image tested and whatever else kind of add on tests they can do during my 1-2yr check up. Always comes back healthy eyes.

It’s recommended that you don’t wear contacts in the shower because most people are fucking dirty and don’t keep their lenses clean. I only wear daily disposable soft lenses or RGP lenses that I clean daily and have never had an eye infection. I shower, swim (even went diving and opened my eyes with my mask off underwater), and take short naps with my lenses on and never had any issues.

You don’t need to see that well to swim, as long as you can see the edges of the lane/pool.

People with contacts aren’t blind without contacts. They can still see basic shapes and colours. If your short sighted you might even be able to make out faces up close.
