How do people who run back into a burning building to save a pet or child survive?

Occasionally I see news stories like “man runs back into burning house and rescues beloved pet”

However, I’ve also been told that you will most likely die in seconds if you inhale the smoke. I’ve read that in a fire you have to crawl to escape. I’ve read that you have to sprint quickly through the flames if you have a chance (the exact opposite of crawling low?).

We had a fire when I was 14 (electrical from a space heater that caused a spark and the fire immediately went around the room lighting everything on fire (curtains, mattress, etc). My mom tried in vain to put it out. My older sister had a newborn at the time and (stupidly) took her formula downstairs and went back to get her baby (baby was fine but she still won’t admit this was dumb). I went down stairs and I tried to go back for our cats but the smoke was way too bad (firemen saved all
If them and no other injuries) but that was my lesson in how bad smoke is – it took literally minutes for our whole apartment to go up in flames.
