A modern TV screen is essentially a “big” wall of lights. Imagine a big wall of light bulbs all screwed in sideways.

If one of those lights burns out, or if you walk up and smash one, it doesn’t emit light, anymore.

The cord for a given row of pixels is cut due to damage or burnout, so all of the lights on that cord after the damaged section go out.
