How do scales tell you how much you weigh?

I stepped on my scale at home and was just wondering how it all worked?

Well there are mechanical and digital scales. A mechanical one will have a spring that compressed when you walk on the scale. The part of the scale you walk on will move down until it’s it balanced by the spring (or spring like mechanism). A needle moves left to right as the plate goes up and down. The heavier you are, the further down the scale is pushed, and the further right the needs goes, indicating your weight.

A digital scale works with a piezoelectric component. A little electrical component that changes its electrical resistance depending on how much pressure you apply on it. A circuit reads the voltage on either side of the resistance. The voltage will change depending on the pressure, and a circuits displays your weight depending on the voltage reading.

They read the force youre exerting on the scale and divide it by the value for gravity that they were calibrated with to give you a mass value
