how do sketch artists work?

How are sketch artists able to draw a picture of someone based just on a description given by someone? Maybe it is just me, but I would not be able to give a good description of a person. Not even of my own daughter. Sure I know she is blond and has brown eyes. But if you would ask me what shape her nose has…… I wouldn’t get further than that she has two holes in het nose…

It is an iterative process. The person describes the person and then they give it a try.. the person then changes something to be closer. Make the hair longer etc.

Often the “drawing” is done by computer or hand etc.

They also have compilations of drawings of a number of body parts for you to select from, so you can narrow down the hair, nose, chin etc.

In addition to what others said, often the best sketch is a composite – the sketch artist does a separate sketch with multiple witnesses, and then combined all of the drawings into a single that best captures the common elements of all of them.

Keep in mind that it’s a very specific skill and sketch artists are very talented, it’s not an easy job and not one that even most artists could do easily.
