How do soccer leagues work?

175 views

I never really paid attention to sports my whole life so I’m not sure how it works. I know a guy who plays at the UPSL/NPSL level and wants to be able to play professionally. Does that mean he will play for the USL 1 or the NISA? Will he have to try out for a specific team that plays in that league? Which league does the Arsenals and Colombia’s national football team play for?

So if he wants to play football professionally, he needs to land a contract with a club. THat is one specific team, e.g. F.C. Lower Calderquerque or Bayern Munich. In which league that club is playing depends on how good they are.

Leagues are almost always national. Basically each football team is in a league with other teams of roughly the same level. If that team is super good, it will rise to a higher league, if it loses a lot, it will fall to a lower league. The highest league in a country is where the big money is made, as those matches are supposed to be of the highest quality, with only the best clubs competing. Those matches are shown on TV and almost all the school children pick their favorite team from those league only. In England, that league is called “premier league”, in Germany, “Bundesliga”, I have no idea what country you are interested in.

Chances are, if he’s not a one-in-a-million prodigy, he will probably land a contract with a third, fourth or even fifth league team. Then he can show how good he is, and if he’s actually really good, other teams from higher leagues will offer his current team money if they transfer him over to them. If the entire club is actually really good, the club itself will rise to a higher league, taking him with them.

Idk how soccer leagues works in the US, and afaik in other countries there’re no drafts like we see in NFL or NBA.

In order to climb in leagues, a player have three options: 1) play for a team since kid and show they abilities to climb the ladder. 2) scouted by other team. 3) do some tryouts as you mentioned, but can or can’t be run anonymously by a team;

About leagues, there are plenty of them going from amateur to pro (eg MLS is a tier 1 pro league and NISA a tier 3) and they can be national or international (eg MLS, Premier League, Brasileirão are nationals; Libertadores, Champions League, and Fifa Club World Cup are international). On top of this, there are nation cups, like the World Cup that happens every 4 year with qualified teams from all all regions (eg. Portugal, Brazil, Spain, US, and England) and some other “regional” international cups like UEFA Nations League.

> Which league does the Arsenals

Do you mean Arsenal? They play in the English Premier League. Apparently there is a band called “The Arsenals”, but I can’t find a sports team by that name.

> and Colombia’s national football team play for?

The national teams work differently from the clubs. They play in a few different competitions such as the World Cup and the various continental championships, but these are all short competitions with only a few matches played by each team. Anyone who is from a given country is eligible to play for the national team, regardless of what club they play for. Matches are scheduled so that international games mostly take place during breaks in the top leagues, so that players can go and play for their national team without missing any matches.
