How do soccer leagues work?

177 views

I never really paid attention to sports my whole life so I’m not sure how it works. I know a guy who plays at the UPSL/NPSL level and wants to be able to play professionally. Does that mean he will play for the USL 1 or the NISA? Will he have to try out for a specific team that plays in that league? Which league does the Arsenals and Colombia’s national football team play for?

Idk how soccer leagues works in the US, and afaik in other countries there’re no drafts like we see in NFL or NBA.

In order to climb in leagues, a player have three options: 1) play for a team since kid and show they abilities to climb the ladder. 2) scouted by other team. 3) do some tryouts as you mentioned, but can or can’t be run anonymously by a team;

About leagues, there are plenty of them going from amateur to pro (eg MLS is a tier 1 pro league and NISA a tier 3) and they can be national or international (eg MLS, Premier League, Brasileirão are nationals; Libertadores, Champions League, and Fifa Club World Cup are international). On top of this, there are nation cups, like the World Cup that happens every 4 year with qualified teams from all all regions (eg. Portugal, Brazil, Spain, US, and England) and some other “regional” international cups like UEFA Nations League.
