How do soccer leagues work?

I never really paid attention to sports my whole life so I’m not sure how it works. I know a guy who plays at the UPSL/NPSL level and wants to be able to play professionally. Does that mean he will play for the USL 1 or the NISA? Will he have to try out for a specific team that plays in that league? Which league does the Arsenals and Colombia’s national football team play for?

So if he wants to play football professionally, he needs to land a contract with a club. THat is one specific team, e.g. F.C. Lower Calderquerque or Bayern Munich. In which league that club is playing depends on how good they are.

Leagues are almost always national. Basically each football team is in a league with other teams of roughly the same level. If that team is super good, it will rise to a higher league, if it loses a lot, it will fall to a lower league. The highest league in a country is where the big money is made, as those matches are supposed to be of the highest quality, with only the best clubs competing. Those matches are shown on TV and almost all the school children pick their favorite team from those league only. In England, that league is called “premier league”, in Germany, “Bundesliga”, I have no idea what country you are interested in.

Chances are, if he’s not a one-in-a-million prodigy, he will probably land a contract with a third, fourth or even fifth league team. Then he can show how good he is, and if he’s actually really good, other teams from higher leagues will offer his current team money if they transfer him over to them. If the entire club is actually really good, the club itself will rise to a higher league, taking him with them.
