Not sure if the right flair, but when you see a rocket ship take off some of the parts fall off as it goes up. How do those heavy pieces of metal fall back to earth safely without hurting anyone or destroying property?

Usually they’re just launched over areas that are not populated.
China is an example of what happens if you don’t care about human safety. They’ve had many accidents involving spent stages (and sometimes even entire, fully fuelled rockets) hitting houses, schools, villages, etc.
