How do speakers work?

An electrical signal is converted to movement of air. In an ideal speaker, the voltage corresponds directly to air movement or pressure. As the voltage oscillates, the air also oscillates, producing sound.

This can be done in a few ways, but the simplest is a coil and magnet. The voltage across the coil changes its magnetic field, and the magnetic field pushes on the magnet. As the voltage changes so does the field and so does the pushing force, and so it cases the coil and magnet to both vibrate and emit sound. Since the coil is probably much lighter than the magnet, it is where most of the sound comes from. The coil is then connected to a speaker cone which helps it catch and push air.
