There are 3 chemicals working together to provide moistened sponges. A surfactant, a softener, and a biocide. When I worked with sponges, magnesium chloride and quaternary ammonium did the job. These kinds of sponges are also supposed to be rinsed before use – which washes out the chemicals – which is why sponges never feels supple again, unless intentionally wetted.
