I worked for one of the biggest pro sports companies in the world. TV rights dwarfed everything else, followed by season ticket sales (for the NFL team, every seat in the stadium was $30k+ PSL). Merch and sponsorships were pretty big but not in the same ballpark as the other 2.
Sports owners in the US basically cannot lose money without really fucking something up. The TV money comes in regardless and the tickets basically sell themselves. Even teams that come in last place are selling 30-70k season tickets.
They’re also kind of financially incentivized NOT to invest in the team because they get paid regardless of how much they spend. That said, most owners are actually fans and are willing to spend a lot to win.
