I’m a Patriots fan so I can break down how Robert Kraft (Patriots Owner) makes money. The Patriots play at Gillette stadium, and the area encompassing the stadium is called “Pats Place” which Kraft owns all of. He is getting paid from the TV rights as another commenter mentioned, merchandise sold either in the stadium or at the pro shop, concessions, all the businesses inside Patriots place pay him to operate there, tickets, concerts held at Gillette.
I worked for one of the biggest pro sports companies in the world. TV rights dwarfed everything else, followed by season ticket sales (for the NFL team, every seat in the stadium was $30k+ PSL). Merch and sponsorships were pretty big but not in the same ballpark as the other 2.
Sports owners in the US basically cannot lose money without really fucking something up. The TV money comes in regardless and the tickets basically sell themselves. Even teams that come in last place are selling 30-70k season tickets.
They’re also kind of financially incentivized NOT to invest in the team because they get paid regardless of how much they spend. That said, most owners are actually fans and are willing to spend a lot to win.
Some teams are publicly owned, so lots of people can own a little bit or a lot of the team. These teams then pay a small amount money to the people who own a bit of the team each year. The amount is determined by the board of directors, who are a group of people who look after the company that runs the team.
People can easily buy and sell some bits of the team too! They do this on the stock market.
