A sprain is a general term for damage to a ligament aka connective tissue that connects bone to bone. They are often rated in terms of severity.

Generally speaking it’s caused when the ligament is over-stretched, causing damage, partial tearing, or tearing. Because of this there’s resultant pain, swelling, inflammation etc. This also causes instability since the ligaments job is to hold things together.
