How do SSRIs work to keep you from being depressed/anxious?

They increase the level of serotonin in the ‚region between nerve cells‘ in the brain, and serotonin seems to have something to do with depression, anxiety, mood, etc., whether directly or by influencing other systems in the brain. that seems to be all we really know so far

Essentially: magic. We don’t actually know.

They block their re-absorption and thereby increase the amount of serotonin and some other substances in your brain. That much is known, but we don’t really understand why it seems to help. It also doesn’t always work, each individual reacts very different. It doesn’t work at all for some, others are almost cured, and yet others get even more suicidal.
