Other than an employee or two standing by, it seems to be riding on customer trust. Wouldn’t a company want to only have cashier lanes, so they can ensure that all products taken from a store are bought fairly?

Walmart has a camera pointed down and watches for items that you don’t scan. I know because I’ve accidentally thought I heard a beep when scanning items, and it stopped me from continuing to check-out and I saw the screen where it showed the camera image for the Walmart employee.
