The tattoo machine has a little reservoir for the ink, and a little motor and mechanism to rapidly move the needle up and down. The tattoo artist uses the gun like a pen to draw on your skin. The needle goes through the top layer of your skin (epidermis) and deposits ink into the lower layer of your skin (dermis). Since the tattoo machine is basically giving you thousands of tiny puncture wounds, the area will be irritated for a little while after tattooing.

Since the ink is deposited into the dermis, the tattoo won’t disappear with normal skin shedding. And the particles of pigment in the ink are too big for your white blood cells to effectively attack, so your immune system won’t remove the tattoo either.
