I was in a book store the other day and after i purchased and went home i decided to look through the pages of my book n i saw the stickers that would go off if it was stolen. can it go off even if you did buy it? and as the title says, how does it get deactivated when purchased?

and no this isn’t so i can steal i’m genuinely curious on how this works.

The stickers I think are deactivated when they are slid/pass over the mousepad like thing usually under the area where they scan the upc barcode at checkout. When the item passes over it whilst being scanned its demagnetised I think in turn “disarming” it. It’s why sometimes you see the checkout person slide an item like a video game several times over this area.

The stickers contain a tiny computer and a radio transmitter in them. You might see several loops of an antenna loop against a light. It receives radio energy and replies back using the received power. They can disable it by blasting it with a strong signal at the checkout.
