The Earth’s surface is broken up into what are known as “tectonic plates.”

The Earth’s crust is really just a thin shell of land floating on top of a much larger mantle of magma. And since the shell is broken up into pieces, they drift around a bit following the flow of the magma and how other plates are pushing on them.

This means that the way the land masses on the surface are organized changes slowly over time.
