Such as teas , coffee , etcetera . I’ve always wondered and even googled it but it just doesn’t make sense to me.

They repeatedly put them chemicals (like ethyl acetate or methylene chloride) and then wash them.

The chemicals soak up the coffeine.

You know how when you pour hot water over coffee grounds, the coffee goodness leaches out?

THey do the same thing first with other solvents (ethyl acetate, or methylene chloride). These other solvents leach out the caffeine only and leave the coffee goodness in the coffee grounds.

It’s a rather long video (roughly 27 minutes), but NileRed has [a video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY8tz1paj6o) on how he made caffeine free Red Bull if you want to actually watch how it’s done

When you put coffee grounds in hot water there are a ton of different chemicals being dissolved into the water. They caffeine of course, but also compounds that give the color and aroma of coffee. These things are all able to dissolve in water but there are other liquids they can’t dissolve in. To decaffeinate coffee they use a different liquid that can take the caffeine but leave the rest in the coffee grounds. After that’s done they dry the grounds out and they can be brewed like normal only without the caffeine
