How do the fancy menstrual pads do such a good job at drawing the liquids to the bottom of the pad?

Sometimes the top layer looks like there’s barely any blood on it, and then you look at the underside and you see that the pad has actually captured a lot of blood. How does that work? I’m guessing it’s some kind of osmosis gradient thing? But could anyone explain the science a bit more? Thank you!
