Do you remember those pop it’s from when we (millennials) were kids? You throw them in the ground and they make a loud pop sound. How do those work?

They had a small amount of low grade friction sensitive explosive in them, like capgun caps. Also in the paper pouch were little bits of ground stone or pumice, like kitty litter. When you threw the pop-it to the ground, the rocks rubbed again the explosive which went “bang.”

Most of those snappers use a chemical called “silver fulminate” it is a rather unstable bit of explosive solid. It’s friction, heat, and shock sensitive. In fact it’s nearly impossible to get large chunks of it because it will self detonate under its own weight.

Those are a lot older than you realize. And as others have said, they are basically small explosives. Now I’m going to go crumble into dust.
