How do they dub shows?

Just curious if anyone here knows how they dub shows, how the voices sounds the same as the original actors & how the lip movement matches?

They write a translated script, then pick voice actors who can fill the character role. They usually don’t try to sound 1:1 like the native language, though sometimes that’s the case. In fact some dubs go in rather different directions with their script/casting. That’s less common these days than it used to be.

As for matching lip movements, that’s actually accounted for in the script. They generally have to match their speaking to the original, at least as best they can. There is a balance in matching lip movements and still delivering a good script/line.

Here’s a youtube link (posted by Vanity Fair) on how the latest version of Pokémon is dubbed to English

There’s an interpreter to make the scripts changes logical for the dub viewer and for the lip movements.

The voice actor/actress works with the director to make it work together. There can be touch up edits along the way to make better without doing full retakes
