How do toys and objects that always remain upright stay upright?

The simplest type have a heavy base, with the rest being very light. The are also shaped so that it can always tip so the the base returns to the lowest point, usually the rounded almost everywhere. They essentially roll around until the center of gravity reaches the lowest possible point.

The center of gravity is the spot where the weight of the object above it is the same as below it. On these type of objects it is very near the bottom. On many common objects it’s near the physical center.

Simple, they’re just weighted on the bottom so that no matter how much the toy pivots, the center of mass pulls it back. The wikipedia page linked above includes a diagram.
