There is a dye in the lens that responds to light. The brighter the light, the less transparent the dye. It’s a specific, complicated chemical molecule.

there is a chemical in them that becomes dark when exposed to sunlight. Sunlight is energy (it powers solar panels), and this energy is what causes the transformation. Indoor light is a lot less intense than sunlight, and does not trigger the darkening.

FYI, these lenses will not go dark when you are driving, since your head is in the shade (as long as your car has a roof).
