How do translators manage to do their jobs during live broadcasting?

Watching various newsfeeds these days has made me wonder if there are tactics or approaches to live translation? I can’t even cope well with hearing my own delayed voice back on a video chat and wondered how they manage to say a translation of the last sentence whilst still hearing the current sentence etc.

WIRED had a video about live interpreting once. Apparently, interpreters have a code for subjects they think will be brought up often and they create this code before the meeting. They will use the codes and symbols that convey the meaning of the speaker and then translate the ideas, not word for word.

There’s also another method of interpreting where they start interpreting some time after the speaker starts speaking.

I’ll go find the link to the video. Be warned that it might not reflect what all interpreters do.
