how do TV news channels decide on which stories to publish and talk about on their show?

Whatever will get the best ratings for the channels particular demographic. I was taught this in college during my electronic news gathering courses. Not much emphasis was put on it as our teachers were ex-NBC guys, but they were able to explain it pretty well in less than 30 minutes.
