How do tv shows/movies make throwing up look real?

They generally *don’t*. It’s usually just an actor with a single mouthful of chunky soup or whatever, which they heave up all at once. In my experience, vomiting tends to be more of a prolonged, repetitive experience.
Either they have the actor spit out a mouthful of puréed stuff or they rig up a tube and pump positioned out of view of the camera for the shots that require a lot of volume
