How do video games create the illusion of distance.

In games such as Horizon Zero Dawn and RDR2 that have large maps you are able to see objects in the distance that would appear to be many many miles away. You’d expect that it’d take hours to get there but it only takes minutes. How is this illusion possible?

There’s also the fact that you’re looking at a relatively small screen, and things that seem massive on screen are actually not that big. Picture say a mountain the same size as you see on screen, but focus on your own 3D environment and suddenly it seems much smaller/closer

Far things small, close things big. make small things big, far things become close.

Have you ever been outside?

Part of it has to do with the fact that they, as experts might put it… really fucking small.

Mountains and stuff are maybe only a couple hundred feet tall, where a real version of that mountain would be kilometer/miles high. It makes it look tall and imposing from a distance, despite being a relatively short distance away.
