How do we know that certain stuff is biodegradable?

I saw something that was biodegradable and I thought it probably just dissolves in like a week or 2, a month if it’s something that is big and tough. But surprisingly, it’s pretty normal/unusualy quick if it ‘degrades’ in 1 year.

How do people making these things know it’s biodegradable? Do they really just leave it to sit outside and then wait 1 year? Because that method seems

1) Entirely impractical as something could never go away and they could just be sitting there for years at a time

2) Like it would take a year to test everytime they tweak it a little bit

Thank you from coming to my Ted Talk!

We’ve been throwing trash in the ground for centuries.

Every landfill ever made is a test bed for what will break down and what won’t.

Yes laboratory studies are done too where they test things under specific conditions.
