How do we measure air quality so precisely?

The city where I live has an air quality of 53 on the index according to my phone and it changes hourly. How can they measure this on so many places around the world?

There are several stations that sample the air and measure particle matter I believe with lasers. They can distinguish smaller ones (up to 2.5micron) and up to 10, respectively PM2.5 and PM10. There are several other substances that can be controlled like CO2, CO, and in general other volatile components. I guess the app just gives you the quality of the nearest station or interpolates data between to stations and approximates a number for your exact location.
