I was in a hot air balloon in Turkey this past fall! It was surprisingly technical! The pilot had complete control over up/down, but also had a bit of side-to-side navigation by changing the shape of the balloon. One small section of the balloon was attached all the way down to the basket and it seemed like he used this to steer somehow. My husband and I are both competitive sailors, so it seemed like a lot of sailing principles. Ultimately we were able to land perfectly on a trailer attached to a truck in the middle of the field and the truck didn’t move, so he had far more side-to-side control than I was ever expecting. It was quite impressive!
