How does a ball pump work eli5

Question

When i insert the needle in the valve all the way up where Does the pump gets its air when i close the tip of the needle with my fingers it cant pump but how can it pump inside the ball?

When you pull the handle of the pump backwards, air is pulled into the pump from the outside. When you push the handle in, the air is then pumped into the ball.
