There is a cup on the load side of the clutch, and then a hub inside of the cup connected to the engine side of the clutch. On this hub, there are a few arms held inwards by springs. As the hub/engine spins faster, the arms are pulled outward by the spinning and eventually touch the inside of the cup. At this point, they begin applying a frictional force to the inside of the cup and transmitting torque.
