How does a garden plant know to concentrate its efforts to the main stem after being “pinched” off?

For strawberries, peas, and other plants, its recommended to pinch off “runners” or excess vine so that the plant produces more along the main stem. How does the plant know to do that?

Imagine a highway with many exit ramps to other highways. The traffics is pretty smooth and flows well as some cars go to other destinations.

If many other exits are closed off, then more cars end up at the same end destination. That means it needs to grow, add more hotels and parking to handle the increase.

The parts of the plant that end up with more nutrients are going to end up growing more if those nutrients arent sent off to other places.
