how does a geyser work? Is it like a pressure cooker?

No, more like exploding water heater. Water boils at higher temperature under pressure, so in the hot area at the bottom of the geyser pipe it becomes overheated compared to normal boiling temperature. Once some of it boils and starts pushing water out, relieving pressure causes a lot more of water to boil, causing an eruption. Then cooler water refills the pipe and the process repeats.
