how does a heat pump work?

I don’t get it. How is cold, even freezing air turned into heat? How is it less energy consuming than other heating systems?

It’s like an air conditioner running in reverse. It generates cold air outside with an evaporator and pumps the vapor indoors where it gets compressed to generate hot air inside with a condenser, before pumping the condensate back outside to continue the cycle.
