How does a passive stylus work (for digital art pads)?

I have a XP-PEN drawing pad that doesn’t recognise any object save its own stylus. However, this stylus is passive. Everything I’ve read on the internet is only explaining passive styli for iPhone screens, etc.

Looks like they use EMR (electro magnetic resonance) – not capacitive like an iPhone. There isn’t a lot of information on their site about the technology, but I would guess from what they do have that it’s using some kind of inductor or near field technology to provide the small amount of power that the pen needs to interact with the screen.
