yes, it is hollow. Most have a ‘diaphragm’, which is just a thin piece of material stretched across the ‘bell’. The diaphragm is like a drum head, but it picks up the vibrations of the heart or other sound you’re listening to. The bell funnels the sounds to the tube attached to the back, and amplifies the sounds like a megaphone in reverse.

Just to piggy back OP, place a cup against the door and put your ear to it. It’s not the same as a stethoscope, it you’ll notice a difference in sound quality when someone speaks through the door.
