Plants, including grass, breathe in carbon dioxide from the air and breathe out oxygen. They drink water and other chemicals through their roots. When sunlight shines on the plant’s leaves, the plant uses the energy to link together the carbon dioxide molecules and water to make sugars — photosynthesis. The sugars power cells in the plant to make other chemicals including the ones that make up cells and the structure of the plant — growing.

As long as the plant gets air, water, and sun it will build new cells to make the plant bigger. Most of the weight of the plant comes from the water it drinks and the carbon dioxide it breathes in.
