How does Accutane work? Why does it have the side effects it does, and why are some of them permanent?

I’ve recently been put on the drug and I think it would ease my mind if I knew how it actually worked.

Accutane reduced the amount of oil your shin produces, which is the ultimate cause of many types of acne. The side effects mostly come from the lack of oil, such as dry skin and sensitivity to the sun.

It didn’t cure my acne and gave me lifelong side effects of migraines and dry eye so bad I could never wear contact lenses again. It’s a miracle drug for some but not for everyone.

My wife was on Accutane when she was younger for acne. She wishes now she’d never been on it at all.

It is my non expert opinion (and my wife’s) that no one should be in accurate for acne. Only, possibly, for its other uses (cancer and other things).

Dries your skin. Anus cracks and bleeding. And it can make you behave like a psycho. A woman I know was on it and was a regular Jekyll and Hyde. Scary.

My Dr told me the side affects aren’t as bad anymore. Basically they used to give it in a really high dosage and it would take a few weeks(?) to go away. Now they give it in a lower dosage but it takes longer.. about 6 mths-1 year for it to go away. He told me I didn’t have anything to work about other than dry skin/lips.

Yeah i know the wikipedia article and warning label and all the shit they made me sign said “causes depression in severe cases”.

I got depression while on accutane. I have a history of depression so that could have just been “normal”, but I decided not to push it. Brought it up to my doctor, still have acne. Can’t win them all.
