how does an electric relay works?

Same as a light switch, except you’re replacing the physical act of flicking the lever with a tiny device that uses electricity to move the lever.

So, it’s like a water pipe that’s closed or open, and running electricity through a valve that changes the status of the pipe.

A regular light switch is like a water pipe valve you change by hand, the relay is like a valve that opens or closes when voltage hits it.
