I’m deeply curious about how EMP’s work (I’m hoping to learn more for a story I’m writing), but I don’t really understand what they do or how they do what they do. I’d also be very interested to know what kinds of technology they affect and which kinds they do not, as well as the extent to which said technology is disabled (and for how long). I tried searching for a lot of these answers on Google but I couldn’t find anything adequately specific enough or clear enough to get into my layman’s head, so here I am!

Moving electron produces magnetic field that travels through space and is able to move other electrons (you will hear about them producing photons, but for the sake of simplicity lets stick with mag. field its the same). This is the basics of telecomunication, a frequency is how fast an electron is moving up and down. Electromagnetic radiation/wave is mag field (photons or whatever you want to call it) changing because an electron moves up and down and so does the field and you end up with a wave of that through space. An emp sends a burst of frequencies in a small amount of time and thus fucking up flowing electrons inside complex devices. If you want to keep a device safe put it in a faraday cage, it can be a metal cage an aluminium foil fully covering it etc.
