It uses infrared, which humans don’t see. Since it doesn’t generate visible light, there’s nothing to show.

The face detection works with invisible light, which can be picked up by the camera. If you point your camera to the front of an iPhone or even a TV remote, you can see the purple light which can’t be seen with your own eyes.
On the other hand, when you try to take a photo in the dark, it’ll take longer to gather enough light to be able to make an image out of it, and this can’t be done in an instant.

FaceID works off infrared…a “colour” (light frequency) that you can’t see but your phone camera can.

So the camera works just fine in the dark…but in a way that you can’t see so the app still looks dark.
