The music is already written down the orchestra play what’s written, so what difference does the conductor make apart from the tempo?

*>The music is already written down the orchestra play what’s written*

This is akin to saying, “the recipe is already written down, just cook what it says” but chefs of different experiences will come up with vastly different dishes.

Beyond the ability of the musicians themselves, a good conductor shapes the **interpretation** of the work, which is why other commenters have mentioned you should go hear a work like Beethoven Symphony 5 and compare the dozen-plus different recordings available on YouTube.

The general concept of leadership to me need s everyone following one person just to make sure everyone’s on the same page. It’s more than anything to me. It’s not about the Authority or knowledge of that person it’s the fact that they keep everyone on the same page and in this case on the same rhythm

As silly as it sounds, its quite simply the speed of light.

The conductor can indicate the changes in mood, speed, tempo, and make microadjustments that the musicians can recognize *and have that information telegraphed to the musicians* by physically standing there, being seen. Seeing is faster than hearing and for a high level orchestra, even the smallest delay in audio recognition leads to an enormous mess.
