My favorite explanation of this process:
Ingredients to make beer: water, barley, hops, yeast. First, the barley is soaked in water to extract the sugars, then the barley is discarded. The sugary solution is then boiled and hops are added. After boil, the solution is cooled and yeast is added then it ferments for a couple weeks. During fermentation, the yeast eats the sugars and poops out co2 and alcohol.
