I don’t actually *know*, but I imagine it goes something like this: You ever done your absolute best to make a drawing, people then tell you is beautiful? But because you made it, all you see are the lines that are slightly off, the perspective that isn’t quite right, with shadows that look out of place? Because you’re too close to it, you don’t get the context of the full picture, your bias against yourself only allow you to see the things that remove the drawing from the vision you had for it in your head.
Translating this to body dysmorphia, you may then correct detail after detail after detail, until the full picture is a patchwork mess of corrections.
(This is how I try to relate to it, but I must emphasise, I don’t really know.)
Speaking for myself its not a hallucination but more of a delusion. And it can also be caused by viewing angles. For example when I look in my mirror head on im seeing a certain perspective and its a deceptive angle and makes me think I look thin. But when I see myself in a photograph or video from the perspective of a 3rd party I say “holy s&#@ im fat”
thats the visual perspective problem but there is also a delusional element. Like when I see the same person in the mirror every day I think oh its same old me im not that fat. When in actuality I have just grown accustomed to my weight. Similar to being in a stinky place. At first it smells awful but 15 minutes later your noes gets used to it and it’s not that stinky anymore. In a similar way you get used to seeing your fat self and become delusional thinking its not that bad.
