The rate at which your liver produces an enzyme (alcohol dehydrogenase) which breaks alcohol down, and the ability of your (mostly nerve) cells to maintain a homeostatic balance in the presence of alcohol.

Building a tolerance to alcohol means that a person can drink more without feeling the effects as much. This happens because the body gets used to the presence of alcohol and starts to process it more efficiently. As a result, a person needs to drink more alcohol to feel the same effects. This can be dangerous because it leads to drinking more than is safe and can increase the risk of alcohol-related health problems.

When you drink alcohol, your body builds up a tolerance to it over time. This means that your body becomes used to the effects of the alcohol, so it takes more and more of it to get the same effect. As you drink more and more, your body adjusts to the alcohol, and so your tolerance increases.

Basically, your body gets used to the alcohol and needs more to feel the same effects. It’s not a good thing though, because it can lead to drinking too much and damaging your health.

There’s a vein that sends blood from your digestive organs to your liver. This let’s the liver remove toxins before they reach the blood. Heavy drinkers livers get increasingly good at removing alcohol so the prefiltering means their liver is removing a larger share of the consumed alcohol before it can reach the brain.

This leads to dangers when butt chugging when the alcohol all goes directly to the blood.
