Catnip contains a chemical called nepetalactone which, when smelled by certain cats, triggers a response in their brain causing them to become playful, euphoric, and disoriented. Not all cats are affected and sensitivity to it can vary. It is believed to be hereditary and more effective in cats 1-5 years old. I don’t know about other animals tho.
